Fix Bootloop After Flashing Firmware

If there was some kind of problem while flashing firmware, then your device might get stuck in the Bootloop mode. The Bootloop mode is when the device keeps on rebooting automatically, and cannot get past the welcome screen or Samsung Logo screen. If this is the case with your device, or your device is facing overheating, lag, battery drain or slow performance issue, then you need to perform a factory/data reset via stock recovery. Follow the step-by-step guide below.

STEP 1: Turn off your device and take out the battery. Put it back on after 20 seconds. If the battery is non-removable on your device, then simply press and hold the power key on your phone until it turns off.

STEP 2: Now boot to Android Menu by pressing and holding Volume UP + Power + Home key on your phone. If your device does not have the Home key, then press and hold Volume UP key + Power.

STEP 3: Soon you will see the Samsung logo on your screen. As soon as it comes up, release Power key, and keep pressing the Volume UP key + Home key until recovery screen shows up.

STEP 4: Stock recovery does not support touch, so here you will have to navigate using Volume UP and Down keys. You can use Power key to select an option.

STEP 5: Before going straight for the Data Factory Reset option, we can try clearing the Cache only. If a corrupt application is the reason behind the problem, this will solve it. Navigate to wipe cache partition and select it using power key. When asked to confirm your selection, select Yes.

STEP 6: If wiping cache partition does not help, then you should perform Data Factory Reset on your device. To do this, navigate to wipe/data factory reset and select it by pressing the power key. When asked for confirmation, select Yes.

STEP 7: The process will take some time to finish. Return to the main menu by selecting the option “+++Go back+++” after the process is complete.

STEP 8: Reboot your device by selecting reboot system now.

How to Use Odin

Before we begin the process of using Odin to flash a firmware on your Samsung Galaxy device, there are few more things which we need.

1. Stock or Custom Firmware: Download the firmware which you want to flash on your device.

2. Samsung USB Drivers: Download and install latest Samsung USB Drivers.

3. Backup Data: Create a backup of your Samsung Galaxy device.

4. Enable USB Debugging: You can do this on your device by following these steps:

STEP 1. Go to Settings. Select About Phone.

STEP 2. Tap the Build number 7 times, till you see the message “You’re now a developer.”

STEP 3. Go to Settings, and select Developer Options. Enable USB Debugging.

Now as we are done with all the preparation, we can begin the process of flashing a stock or custom firmware on your Samsung Galaxy device using Odin. Follow the steps below carefully.

STEP 1. Extract the files from zip folders of Odin Downloader and Firmware in separate folders.

STEP 2. Right click on Odin3 tool with .exe extension and select Run as Administrator.

STEP 3. Now reboot your Samsung Galaxy smartphone into download mode. You can do this by pressing and holding these buttons together: Volume Down key + Home key + Power key. After pressing these keys for 6 seconds, you will see an Android Warning on your device’s screen. Press Volume Up to continue. This will load your device into Odin mode.

STEP 4. Connect your smartphone to PC using a USB cable. ID:COM section on Odin will show the message “Added!” if your device is connected successfully. If you don’t see the confirmation, follow these steps.

• Reboot your device. Disable USB Debugging from Settings > Developer Options. Turn USB Debugging back ON.
• Uninstall the Samsung USB Drivers on your PC and reinstall them.
• Restart your PC.
• Change the USB Cable if the problem still persists.

STEP 5. Now, click on PDA or PA button. Newer versions of Odin have PA button and older versions have PDA button. After clicking on it, locate the folder where you extracted your firmware’s files.

STEP 6. Select the file with this extension: .tar or .tar.md5.

STEP 7. You will be taken back to the main Odin window. Here, under Options on the left side, mark/check the boxes in front of Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time. Also, unmark/uncheck if any other box under Options is marked/checked.

STEP 8. Now, click Start button. This will flash the firmware onto your Samsung Galaxy device. This may take some time, so have patience. Soon, Odin will show confirmation message as “PASS!”. Your Samsung Galaxy device will reboot automatically.

Samsung Odin tool works with Windows PC. If you are a Mac or Linux user, you can download Heimdall or the Java Odin from below.

Since the success rate of flashing firmware binaries with Odin differs according to Odin versions, you should always download the Odin version recommended by the tutorial you are following. If you aren’t sure which Odin version to use, download the latest Odin.

Прошивка

1. Скачайте zip файл с официальной прошивокй для вашего устройства и распакуйте архив себе на компьютер. Вы увидите либо один .tar или .tar.md5 файл, или же несколько файлов:

— если вы увидите один файл, то внутри него уже будет все что вам нужно для успешной прошивки (PDA, PHONE, CSC);

— если же файлов несколько, то используйте отдельные кнопки PDA, PHONE, CSC для выбора соответствующих файлов;

2. Скачайте архив с прикрплённый к посту внизу распакуйте его. Вы увидите следующие файлы:

— Odin3 v3.04.exe;

— tmax.dll;

— zlib.dll;

— Odin3.ini;

3. Запустите Odin3_v3.04.exeна правах администратора (правый клик —> в режиме администратора).

4. Загрузите ваше устройство в режим загрузки (download mode). Для большинства устройств от Samsung для этого надо выключить устройство и после этого одновременно зажать кнопки Home (домой) + Питание + Звук вниз и в появившемся меню подтвердить вход в режим загрузки путём нажатия звука вверх.

5. После того как телефон находится в режиме загрузки, подключите его к компьютеру через USB кабель. Если Odin распознает ваше устройство то поле ID:COM станет желтого или голубого цвета и отобразит номер COM порта (скриншот внизу).

6. Если zip архив с прошивкой имел всего один файл, то кликните на кнопку PDA и через обзор выберите .tar или .tar.md5 файл с вашей прошивкой. В случае же если zip архив с прошивкой имел несколько файлов:

— нажмите на PDA и выберите файл который имеет CODE или PDA в своём названии;

— нажмите на PHONE и выберите файл который имеет MODEM в своём названии;

— нажмите на CSC и выберите файл который имеет CSC в своём названии;

7. Убедитесь что флажки расставлены правильно:

— Auto Reboot и F. Reset Time должны быть отмечены;

— все остальные флажки не отмечены;

8. После выбора соответсвующих файлов и проверки флажков нажмите кнопку Start. Начнется процесс прошивки. Ни в коем случае не отключайте телефон от компьютера во время этого процесса. Это можно занять несколько минут.

9. Как только процесс прошивки завершится, ваше устройство перезагрузится. Теперь вы можете отключить его от компьютера и начать использовать.

Внимание: Если вы не увидите номер порта в поле ID:COM или если поле не будет желтого или голубого цвета, пожалуйте не продолжайте операцию. Отключите USB и перезагрузите ваше устройство путем нажатия и долгого удерживания кнопки питания

Проверьте корректно ли установлены USB драйвера для Samsung. 

Установка заводских/официальных прошивок через Odin, обычно, довольно безопасное занятие если все делать верно. Но стоит понимать, что всегда существует шанс брикнуть/сломать устройство, пусть и невелик. Так что все это вы будете делат на свой страх и риск, и автор поста не несет никакой ответственности если что-то пойдет не так.

What is Odin

Odin Downloader is a flash tool, using which you can flash custom firmware, stock firmware, and root packages on Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Note that this software works only for Samsung Galaxy devices. Why? Because Samsung smartphones are pretty root friendly, and their stock firmware is not hard to find. When the stock firmware is by your side, you can always take the risk to flash a custom recovery or simply root kernels. Also, unlike other Android devices which have Bootloader mode in an interface along with Fastboot and Recovery options, the Samsung Galaxy devices only require key combinations to download recovery modes.

Odin has become pretty famous among Samsung Galaxy users. Samsung initially developed it for the use at Samsung’s service centers. But, somehow it got leaked and today what we use is just the leaked version of Odin. Sure, the leaked version of Odin has been around for a long time, but developers around the world have evolved it to match and work with new Samsung devices. Odin can only be used on a Windows PC and is very easy to use. Flashing a firmware on any device is a complicated job, but Odin does this work in very simple steps.

Latest Odin Download for Windows

As mentioned above, Samsung Odin is available only for Windows PC and is compatible with Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10. In case you are a macOS user or have Linux installed on your computer, you can use Odin’s alternative called Heimdall.

Odin has seen little changes over the years. You’ll hardly notice any change in Odin’s interface after Odin3 v3.06. However, after the release of Android Pie-based firmware, Samsung started using LZ4 compression for firmware binaries that can be uncompressed only by Odin v3.13.1, Odin3.13.3, and Odin 3.14.4 (the latest version as of now).

Latest Odin 3.14.4 (2021)

The latest Odin is considered the most versatile version of the tool because it usually supports almost all Samsung devices. However, certain versions of Samsung firmware may require a specific Odin version.

Odin 3.14.4 is the latest version and it is fully compatible with the latest UI 3.0+ (Android 11) and older versions of One UI (Android 9.0 Pie) as well as Android 8.0 Oreo-based Samsung firmware. If you own a Samsung Galaxy S21, S20, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S10, Samsung Note 9, Galaxy A80, A70, A50, M30, or any Galaxy device released in 2019-2021, you should try Odin3 v3.14.4.

Download Modified & Patched Odin

You can use the modified and patched versions of Samsung Odin by Raymond, PrinceComsy, and Realbbb to flash firmware binaries or custom recovery .tar.md5 files in special cases like skipping SHA256 check. If you get the “FAIL! SHA256 is invalid!” error while using the normal version of Odin, you should use the patched Odin to fix the SHA256 error.

Besides, patched Odin can also help you bypass “FAIL! Blocked carrier” error while installing the firmware on Samsung Galaxy devices from carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint US Cellular, Rogers, Bell, etc.

Use patched or modified Odin if the developer has specifically recommended using it.

If you wish to install an Android 8.0 Oreo or Android 9.0 Pie-based Samsung firmware, use Odin3 3.13.1.

Odin v312.5, v3.11.2, and v3.10.6 are considered suitable for flashing Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Android 7.0 Nougat-based firmware.

To install Android Lollipop and KitKat firmware, you should use Odin3 v3.09.

Android JellyBean firmware can be flashed using Odin3 3.07 or 3.04.

To flash Android Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich-based Samsung firmware, you should try one of the following versions of the Samsung Odin tool.

Odin Options Explained

When you launch Samsung Odin, you’ll be greeted by the Odin window and will see a variety of buttons with options like BL, AP, CP, CSC, UserData, and PIT. If you are not aware of these terms, I have them explained below for better understanding.

Odin Tool explained

• Auto Reboot: This option is enabled by default in Odin. Keep it that way if you are going to flash the stock firmware. However, due to bootloader encryption on most Samsung devices, you’ll need to disable ‘Auto Reboot‘ before flashing TWRP or any custom recovery.
• Nand Erase: If you select this option in Odin, it will completely erase everything on your Samsung device including the Operating System and all data present on it. If you don’t know what you’re supposed to do after performing a ‘Nand Erase‘, you’ll end up turning your device into an expensive paperweight.
• Re-Partition: The option should be checked only if you flashing a Samsung PIT file along with the firmware. Enabling ‘Re-Partition’ will re-partition your Samsung device to its default state. Don’t use this option unless you understand what partitioning is.
• F Reset Time: Check this option only if you want to reset the firmware flashing timer on your device.
• BP: This means Bootloader and as it’s evident from the very name, it’s used to flash the bootloader file with .tar or .tar.md5 extension.
• AP: On the older versions of Odin, this option was called PDA and was used to flash single-file firmware, recovery, and CF-Root files. The full-fledged name of AP is ‘Android Processor’.
• CP: CP stands for ‘Core Processor’ and is used to flash the Modem file that comes with the Samsung firmware binaries package. In the older versions of Odin, this option was called Phone.
• CSC:  The full-form of CSC is ‘Consumer Software Customization’ or ‘Country Specific Code’. The CSC component of a Samsung firmware is specific to network providers and geographical regions. In other words, it contains customizations related to a geographical location, APN settings, carrier branding, and other things. Learn more about Samsung CSC and Home CSC.
• PIT: or Partition Information Table contains information such as device storage partition tables, partition name, block size, block count, and other technical stuff. Every device has a different PIT file associated with it. PIT files are not meant to be flashed unless a device’s partition table layout has been corrupted for some reason.

Odin is Samsung’s official firmware flash tool and it was developed by the manufacturer only to be used in their service centers. What you find on the Internet are the leaked or unofficially distributed versions of the software.

Once you have downloaded the latest Samsung Odin, you will need to download the proper firmware binaries for your device. You can download them directly from the Samsung Firmware Update Server using the Frija firmware download tool.

Download Odin for Mac and Linux

Please note that Odin doesn’t support either macOS or Linux. However, you can use Odin alternatives like Heimdall and JOdin3 to flash the firmware.

Similarly, tools like Samfirmand Frija do not support macOS. However, if you want to check for the latest update for your Galaxy device, you can use a cross-platform tool called Samloader on Mac, Linux, and Android to download Samsung firmware directly from Samsung Firmware Update Server.

Heimdall – Odin Alternative for Mac & Linux

Since Odin works only with Windows, Mac and Linux users can’t use it. Don’t worry, there’s an open-source tool called Heimdall that is compatible with Linux, Mac, and Windows as well. It’s a great Odin alternative and you can download its latest version from the official website.

Download JOdin3 for Linux

For Linux users, there’s a special version of Odin called JOdin3 CASUAL that requires Java 8 to be installed on your computer to function. The credit for sharing the latest JOdin3 goes to Toby4213 from the xda forums.

Tips: Download jodin.gz file, extract it to the directory you want: /home/username/programs/jodin/ (for example). Then right-click on the file named JOdin3CASUAL. Make sure you have Java version 8 or greater installed already.

Odin for Mac (based on Heimdall)

Finally, there’s a Heimdall-based version of Odin that requires Java for Mac to run. Its interface is based on the older version of Odin but you can still use it flash Samsung firmware on Samsung device on OS X machine. I am not sure if it still works with the recent versions of OS X because I haven’t ever tried it personally.
